Code Enforcement for Mopeds and Scooters

October 27, 2016
To:
All University Students
From:
Michael A. Gibson, Chief of University Police

Dear Students:

As part of the University's efforts to create a safe community, we are providing the following information about the use of mopeds and scooters on University property and related code enforcement.

Mopeds and scooters are considered motor vehicles, just like cars, and must follow the same Commonwealth of Virginia codes. Like cars or trucks, the following laws apply:

  • Mopeds and scooters cannot be driven or ridden on sidewalks.
  • Mopeds and scooters must adhere to fire safety codes and cannot obstruct building egress routes or fire lanes.
  • Mopeds and scooters must be parked in legal parking spaces and/or specifically designated motorcycle/scooter/moped parking areas.

The University Police Department is charged with enforcing the Commonwealth's vehicle codes, with assistance from Parking & Transportation during normal business hours. Vehicles found to be in violation will be towed at the owner's expense.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Gibson
Chief of University Police
