Message to Students Potentially Affected by Hurricane Matthew

October 7, 2016
To:
Students in Affected Areas
From:
Allen W. Groves, University Dean of Students

Dear Students:

We have been monitoring the news about Hurricane Matthew. Since you are from one of the states or areas in the Caribbean that is feeling the most impact from this devastating storm, we wanted to reach out with a message of support.

We hope the storm is having a minimal impact on your family and friends, but if you are being affected in some way and need assistance, please do not hesitate to let us know. Being away from family and friends as they are experiencing such unsettledness and uncertainty no doubt creates a degree of personal distress for you.

If you would like to gather with others whose hometowns may be affected by the storm, we are setting aside tomorrow afternoon (Saturday, Oct. 8) from 4 to 6 p.m. in Pavilion V as a time for reflection and camaraderie. A representative from Student Affairs will be present. You or anyone you know who has been affected by the hurricane is invited to come by at your convenience. Please enter the Pavilion from the door that opens onto the Lawn. Snacks and beverages will be served.

In addition, if the hurricane results in financial hardship for you and your family, and if you are concerned about how this hardship may impact your ability to meet your financial obligations to the University or for other school-related expenses, such as rent, please contact Student Financial Services at 434-982-6000 or at sfs@virginia.edu.

We will continue to keep you and your loved ones in our thoughts over the next few days.

Sincerely,

Allen W. Groves
