University Librarian John Unsworth

Did you know that the first two librarians at the University of Virginia (John Keane and William Wertenbaker) were appointed when they were students? As your 15th University Librarian, I, too, have been a student at UVA, having done my Ph.D. here (in English, in the 1980s) before returning in 1993 to a faculty appointment in the English Department and an administrative role as director of the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. My current appointment as University Librarian (and Professor of English) began in late June.

I hope you had a great summer and are looking forward to the upcoming semester. As always, our expert and helpful librarians are looking forward to working with you as you do research for your classes, thesis, or independent study. Please don't hesitate to ask them for help: you should be able to identify them by their blue and white library nametags.

Here on Grounds, you'll find that some things have changed during the summer. Most notably, the second floor of Clemons Library will be closed for the fall and spring semesters while it is being renovated to create a central location for student advising of all sorts. You can read more about this in an article in UVA Today. Clemons is also receiving a new roof; this will be a noisy job, but it will fix leaks that have become water features on Clemons 4, and it'll add a solar array on the new roof that will offset some of the power used in the building.  For the fall semester, we'll be providing maps of other study spaces on Grounds to help students find alternative locations for everything from quiet study to group study.

Here's to a happy and productive year,

John Unsworth
University Librarian and Dean of Libraries
