Concert Update and Welcome Week 2017

To the University Community:

As chair of the University Programs Council, an organization on Grounds founded to provide welcoming and inclusive events and spaces for students, I and the rest of our Council are grateful for the opportunity to welcome students to Grounds this upcoming week. However, I feel we would not be following through on this promise of inclusion if we did not speak out against the hatred and violence our community has recently experienced.

To all students, we acknowledge your pain and confusion, and we feel that pain and confusion alongside you. Hate and white supremacy have absolutely no place on Grounds and no place in our community, and we reject those who threaten our community with such bigotry. We strive to ensure that all UVA students of all races, genders, sexual orientations, religious affiliations, abilities, and backgrounds feel welcome at UVA and at our events.

UPC has always taken pride in the opportunity to welcome and welcome back UVA students to the University at the start of each year, and we recognize the added responsibility this year to help heal and reclaim some of the security that has been lost on these Grounds. We encourage you to join us this week as we celebrate the new year and embrace this opportunity to unite around community, diversity, and love.

Chair, University Programs Council

CONCERT UPDATE

Yesterday evening, the University was notified that Future and Lil Yachty cancelled their appearance at the Welcome Week concert scheduled for Saturday. The artists have not rescheduled their appearance at this time.

While we are very disappointed that Future and Lil Yachty will not be able to perform, UPC is currently taking steps towards programming another event(s) for new and returning students to celebrate coming together for a new year. A number of previously scheduled social events and activities will still take place around Grounds on Saturday night, planned by several other organizations, including Resident Staff and IM-Rec.

Look out for additional information on the UPC Facebook page. For further questions, please contact uvaupc@virginia.edu. UPC will do their best to respond in a timely manner.
