Dear Students:

For some of you, this Saturday will be a chance to attend the Foxfield Races in Albemarle County before classes end and exams begin. If you do choose to attend, I urge you to be smart about your own safety and that of your friends. Please be aware of the following safety efforts coordinated by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) peer educators in conjunction with the Class of 2017, the University Judiciary Committee, the Inter-Fraternity Council, the Inter-Sorority Council, and the Peer Health Educators.

  • Savvy Fox Safety Pledge: Sign the pledge committing to look out for your friends and to practice safe drinking habits if you are of legal age to drink. Twelve hundred students who sign the pledge will receive a free Foxfield T-shirt.
  • Foxfield Education Programs: Attend one of ADAPT's sessions on Wednesday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. or 8 p.m. in Newcomb Ballroom (this also will fulfill FOA requirements for fraternity/sorority chapters). Door prizes include free Foxfield tickets.
  • Student Safety Tent: Visit the ADAPT tent at Foxfield on the gravel road, near plot A-50 to grab some snacks, water, and sunscreen. See the Foxfield map on the ADAPT website.
  • Catering Guide: Review the catering guide to make sure your group has enough food to last the entire day.
  • Foxfield Transportation Option: Yellow Cab of Charlottesville is organizing transportation to and from Foxfield.

Foxfield is not a UVA-sponsored event. The only official UVA presence includes a safety tent hosted by UVA's ADAPT peer educators. As in past years, there will be a significant law enforcement presence on the roads leading to Foxfield and within the event grounds. These uniformed officers, in conjunction with a private public safety team, will focus on providing a safe environment for all spectators, assisting individuals in need of help, and deterring and responding to illegal activity. Foxfield has posted information for students on its website.

The below infographic provides important tips on getting medical help, looking out for your friends, and getting home safely.

Please enjoy the Foxfield Races, but also be smart, think about your personal safety, and watch out for one another.

Sincerely,

Allen W. Groves
University Dean of Students
