Dear Parents of the Class of 2021:

Greetings and welcome to the University of Virginia community. We are pleased that you and your student have chosen UVA. The coming year promises to be a time of growth for your daughter or son and the start of an exciting new chapter for your family.

Summer Orientation marks the official beginning of this new chapter. We hope you will participate in the Parent Orientation program, which runs concurrently with the student program. The deadline to register for Summer Orientation is June 1. Please be sure your daughter or son completes the registration by going to http://orientation.virginia.edu/summer.

After Orientation, we look forward to your involvement in activities planned especially for parents and family members. Family Weekend, programs and activities in your region sponsored by UVAClubs, athletic events, travel programs, publications, and the University's website all offer avenues for you to be part of the UVA community.

If your daughter or son provided your email address on the application for admission, then we will plan to use this address in sending you periodic updates throughout the academic year. These updates usually highlight health and safety issues, remind you of key dates, and summarize other timely topics. Your email address will be used only for communication from my office and other UVA offices interacting with parents. If you want to be certain we have your current email address and other contact information, you can complete a brief form at http://hoosonline.virginia.edu/parentsemail.

A few other ways to stay in touch as a parent:

  • If you would like to receive the UVA Today Daily Report, please subscribe online. This daily (weekday) email will keep you informed about University people and initiatives.
  • Please mark your calendar for Family Weekend, taking place November 3-5. This year, the weekend includes a football game against Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon. For more details, with links to game ticketing information and a list of local accommodations, please see a recent letter from University Dean of Students Dean Groves. We do recommend making hotel reservations as soon as possible. The Family Weekend website, www.virginia.edu/familyweekend, provides more details and will be updated this fall with the complete schedule.
  • UVA Alerts notifies registered users via text message when the University community faces imminent threat from a hazard. Since this system requires a computing ID, only students and staff are eligible to register for accounts, but students may add parent contacts to their accounts. Encourage your student to sign up at www.virginia.edu/uvaalerts.
  • In the event of a University emergency, please go to www.virginia.edu/emergency for general safety information and for frequent updates. In addition, the University maintains an Operations Status Board with information on any schedule changes resulting from inclement weather or other hazard.

Parents are vital partners in the educational process. Your influence and guidance will remain strong as your student meets new challenges, grows academically and socially, and develops an expanding sense of independence.

I look forward to seeing you this summer at Orientation. We hope this will mark the beginning of a rewarding new relationship, not only for your student, but also for you as you join this special community.

Sincerely,

Patricia M. Lampkin
