Dear Graduate and Professional Students:
As Dean of Students for all schools of the University, I begin this message with a warm welcome to those of you who are new to UVA. While you will be spending considerable time in your school or program, I want to acknowledge you are part of the larger University community. We look forward to the times when you can join in activities and initiatives that bring us together as the UVA family. As someone who took a graduate degree from the University, I certainly appreciate the many demands on your time.
Yesterday, I sent a message to undergraduate students about taking time to reflect on their goals for the new academic year. You are certainly in a different place as far as your academic career, but I know moments spent reflecting on where we want our lives to go can be quite valuable. The community around you can be a source of sustenance as well as a place to leave your imprint through service and engagement.
Most of the resources available to undergraduates also are available to you. If you are looking for a particular resource and cannot find it through your program or school, please contact our office, and we will put you in touch with the appropriate individuals.
In terms of personal safety, the updated Student Safety Guide is something you may want to review now. It summarizes all the resources you can access—UVA Ambassadors, Safe Ride, Green Dot, and others—as well as personal safety tips. We emphasize personal safety to our undergraduates, and it is equally important for you to know about resources and expectations.
As I said to our undergraduates, I have tremendous confidence in you, our students. I trust you to make responsible choices as citizen leaders within the UVA community, as well as in the surrounding community we share with our Charlottesville and Albemarle County neighbors. The community of trust, the foundation of UVA’s Honor System, truly means something here. We all have a duty to keep striving to ensure everyone feels equally welcome and included here.
This is a strong community and you are the heart of it. I am looking forward to a safe and fulfilling year for each of you, and I wish you the very best as you begin the new academic year.
