Did you know that the first two librarians at the University of Virginia (John Keane and William Wertenbaker) were appointed when they were students? As your 15th University Librarian, I, too, have been a student at UVA, having done my Ph.D. here (in English, in the 1980s) before returning in 1993 to a faculty appointment in the English Department and an administrative role as director of the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. My current appointment as University Librarian (and Professor of English) began in late June.
Welcome back to Grounds from UVA Athletics! The purpose of this email is to inform you how to attend home Virginia Athletics events during the 2016-17 academic year as well as to explain important changes to the Sabre Points system and how those change will impact admission to home men's basketball games. The changes are the result of consultation with UVA Student Council and have been approved by your student leadership.
Dear New and Returning ’Hoos,
Welcome – and welcome back – to UVA! To celebrate the beginning of the school year, University Programs Council (UPC) is thrilled to announce our full calendar of Welcome Week events.
This week, we welcomed our new international students to the Grounds for the final Orientation session before Move-In Weekend. We are looking forward to all students being on the Grounds in the next few days for the start of the new year. It is always an exciting time as we begin a new chapter in the University's history.
Dear New UVA Student:
I write to welcome you to the University of Virginia. In just a few days, you will join a community that has high standards for academic rigor, integrity, trust, and respect for others. By choosing UVA, you have embraced these values along with us, and we look forward with great excitement to your arrival.
In a few short days we will welcome the Class of 2020 to Grounds and launch a new academic year. I hope your student is excited about the new year. We are looking forward to their return and to the energy they bring to this special place. Although the summer has been busy with several major projects in the works or nearing completion—including the historic two-year renovation of the Rotunda—the students truly bring the University back to life every August.
Dear Parents of Second-Year Students:
I write to congratulate you and your student on the beginning of your student's second year at UVA. While the first year in college is often a time of academic and social adjustment, the second year provides new opportunities for intellectual growth, social maturation, and independence. In the second year, UVA students tend to take on increasing leadership roles and greater levels of responsibility. These are natural steps in the process of becoming adults.
Dear Parents of New Students:
We have enjoyed seeing you at the Orientation sessions this summer, and now we are looking forward to your daughters and sons moving in next week. Starting a new academic year offers a sense of excitement and promise that we welcome every August.
Dear Parents of New Students:
As you prepare to bring your son or daughter to Charlottesville for the beginning of the fall semester, I write to welcome you to the University family.
Dear Parent of New Transfer Student:
Greetings and welcome to the University of Virginia community. We are pleased that your daughter or son has chosen UVA as the place to continue their studies.
Summer Orientation marks the official beginning of your student's entry into the University. Three sessions are planned specifically for transfer students:
