To the University Community:
It is with sadness that I inform you of the death of Jessica Alston, a rising second-year student in the School of Nursing from Virginia Beach. Those who knew Jessica have said her kind, calm, and reassuring manner would have made her a perfect nurse. Jessica had decided to enter the field of nursing as a result of her father's experience serving on the U.S.S. Cole when it was attacked in 2000. She was especially interested in learning more about labor and delivery nursing and neonatal nursing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Jessica's parents, Melvin and Leticia Alston; other family members; and her UVA friends and classmates. A funeral service will take place Saturday, June 3, at 1 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 3445 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456. Visitation will precede the service from noon to 1 p.m.
The loss of a member of our community is difficult and can touch us in different ways. If you need support during this time, please call Counseling and Psychological Services at 434-243-5150 during their summer business hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Monday through Friday). For after hours or weekend crisis assistance, please call 434-297-4261. Information about CAPS is available on the Student Health website.
The University is a special place in large part due to the bonds we form with each other. Even though many of you are not presently on Grounds, please continue to support and look out for one another.
