Today marks the end of the first week of classes for undergraduates. On Monday, the Lawn and steps of the Rotunda were filled with students, faculty, and staff viewing the eclipse. The sounds of conversations and cheering for the eclipse confirmed that the Grounds are fully back to life for a new academic year. Wahoo Welcome activities have been continuing for new students, and among other events planned for this weekend, all students are invited to a free picnic, outdoor movie, and festivities celebrating the UVA Arts Grounds.
We continue to recover from the unprecedented and horrific events of August 11 and 12. Last week, President Sullivan established a working group, led by Law School Dean Risa Goluboff, to conduct an immediate review of those events, existing laws, and relevant University policies. Yesterday, Dean Goluboff sent a message to students, faculty, and staff detailing the group's progress to date and announcing the launch of a website where updates about the group's work will be posted. The website includes links to safety resources as well as responses to questions that have arisen since August 11. In addition, the site includes a form for parents and other members of the UVA community to offer input.
Both inside and outside the classroom, many conversations have been taking place about the recent acts of hatred and violence as well as past injustices that have marked the University and many aspects of our history. We will continue to encourage open and civil dialogue in the search for expression, clarity, and perspective. As educated citizens who will become the leaders of tomorrow, our students have a responsibility to understand these issues with an eye to the past and present as well as to the future. The strong sense of community that we enjoy within the University can enable healing, mutual respect, and greater understanding.
Your students are the lifeblood of the University. We are honored to work alongside them to create a safe, mutually respectful environment that results in the best possible student experience for each of them.
If I or a member of my staff can be of assistance to you or your student, please let me know.
