This has been a wonderful week in UVA history. Many of you turned out at JPJ yesterday to welcome our basketball team home, and I look forward to seeing you on Saturday afternoon in Scott Stadium when the broader community comes together to celebrate our National Championship. These student-athletes and their coaches have brought honor and pride to the University, not only for their win but also for staring down adversity and embodying the meaning of “calm under pressure.”
When I wrote you on Monday, I asked you to show how a world-class university celebrates the success of its championship team. With only a few exceptions (which our first responders handled admirably), I am very proud of how the celebrations unfolded on Monday night and Tuesday morning, and I enjoyed being with you on the Corner. Thank you for rising to the occasion with respect for yourself, your fellow students, and the surrounding community. Your safe, responsible and respectful behavior shows how a community can be both great and good. Our local newspaper, The Daily Progress, published a story this morning reinforcing this point.
May your leadership around safety and responsibility continue as the semester heads into its final weeks. I wish you the very best on your upcoming final exams, and I look forward to seeing you around our shared Grounds.
