Dear Members of the University Community:
It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the passing of Henry Reed, a rising third-year student in the Class of 2021. Henry was hospitalized at Johns Hopkins on July 31 for treatment of a previously undiagnosed brain tumor. Following emergency surgery and a courageous battle to recover from significant complications, Henry passed away on August 8. He was surrounded by his loving family in his final hours, and is described by his older sister Kate as “a wise old soul, a hard-working, smart and funny music enthusiast and a true-blue loyal friend. Most of all, he was a sweet, unassuming, and kind young man who was a devoted son and beloved brother beyond measure.”
Henry was a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, with an interdisciplinary major in Statistics and a concentration in Econometrics. He was an exceptional student, earning Dean’s List honors and achieving a 3.85 grade point average in a rigorous course of study. Outside the classroom, Henry was an actively engaged and well-loved brother in Kappa Alpha fraternity; played on several intramural soccer and Ultimate Frisbee teams; and provided free tax preparation services to low- and middle-income Charlottesville residents through Madison House.
A 2017 graduate of the Severn School in Severna Park, Maryland, Henry captained his varsity soccer team to three MIAA conference championships and ran middle distance on his track and field team, taking second in the 4x400 meter conference championship. He also served as a senior prefect, helping guide incoming freshman into the community. Before matriculating at UVA, Henry spent the summer working eight 40-hour weeks as an apprentice to a master electrician, picking up valuable life skills (and, as he quickly noted, callused hands).
The loss of a classmate and fellow member of our community is always challenging, perhaps even more difficult during an academic recess. If you need support during this time, you may call Counseling and Psychological Services at 434-243-5150, 24 hours a day. Information about CAPS is available on the Student Health website. If you are a student at home for the summer, you may still call CAPS staff for assistance. Family and friends are also a good source of support.
Faculty and staff can find a similar resource through the Faculty and Employee Assistance Program by calling 434-243-2643 or by using the Appointments tab on the FEAP website.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Henry’s parents, Matthew and Amy Reed of Arnold, Maryland; his siblings, Kate, Fritz, and Sally; his Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers; and his many other friends, UVA classmates, and faculty members whose lives he impacted in a positive way.
A celebration of Henry’s life will be held on Saturday, September 14, at the Pines on the Severn Community Beach. Please keep Henry’s family and many friends in your thoughts.
