Dear Class of 2024,
Interested in running for class president? Interested in planning events for your dorm? Interested in helping build communities? This is the organization for you!
Now that I have your attention, I would like to say welcome to UVA! My name is Hunter Fox, and I am the Vice Chair for Council Leadership within Housing & Residence Life. I am reaching out to you today to provide a little information on the leadership program that I run called the Residential Leadership Experience, or RLE. RLE is composed of two different councils: Association Council and First Year Council. This program has been running for quite some time and is an amazing way to get involved your first year.
Association Council is a group of 3 elected members and 1 Eco-Leader. This body of students helps plan creative ways to bring their dorm building together and do so sustainably. Eco-Leaders are the connection between on-Grounds residents and the UVA Office of Sustainability. These individuals bring a sustainable lens to the RLE program. Working closely with your Senior Resident, your task is to help make housing a home by providing events for the dorm. A catchphrase I like to use is that Association Council plans events by students for students. This year building community is going to be extremely important due to the limited social gatherings and distancing. With that being said, programming will look a bit different. Important Note: At this time, Association Council will only be offered to residents that have chosen to return to UVA for the Fall 2020 Semester. However, there will be 6 elected positions for those who have chosen to live at home/off Grounds for FYC (see more info below).
First Year Council
First Year Council is a group of approximately 55 members chosen by their class to help plan class-wide events, build class identity, and unify their class over their four years at UVA. Each dorm elects 3 representatives to sit on this council. First Year Council puts on events for the entire class to enjoy like study breaks, talent shows, First Year Formal, community service activities, and more. If you are interested in running for class president or vice president, you must first be elected to First Year Council. Important Note: There will be 6 elected positions offered for individuals who have decided to live off Grounds/at home for the Fall 2020 Semester. If interested, these individuals are still encouraged to apply for president and vice president if they so desire.
