Dear New Students and Parents:

Congratulations and welcome to UVA! Now that you have selected the University, you have several important decisions to consider before arriving on Grounds in August, one of which is the purchase of a new computer, an essential component of your academic career. Although not required, having a laptop during your virtual orientation will be of great assistance during course advising and registration.

As you begin thinking about your computer purchase, I encourage you to consider the advantages of the Computing at Virginia (CAV) Program offered by Cavalier Computers, located in the University Bookstore. The CAV Program offers computers from Apple, Dell, Lenovo, and Microsoft configured in advance to simplify the connection to the UVA secure network, as well as to ensure optimal performance. The CAV Program also provides various options for warranty, repairs, and support through the Cavalier Computers Service Department.

The team at Cavalier Computers works closely with the various IT coordinators in each school and the College at the University to ensure that CAV Program computers are supported by and fully compatible with all UVA systems. Cavalier Computers preconfigures computers to meet school-specific requirements including, but not limited to, Engineering, Architecture, and Nursing; and installs all essential UVA-licensed software. Every CAV Program PC comes with Microsoft Windows, virus protection, and other common web-based applications. Macs come with the latest Mac OS X and a similar software bundle appropriate for the Apple platform. Microsoft Office for Windows and Macs is available for all CAV Program computers via download at no additional charge.

All CAV Program computers include a warranty for up to four years including accidental damage protection (a CAV Program exclusive for Apple computers). If your laptop breaks, the Apple-, Dell-, HP-, and Lenovo-authorized technicians at Cavalier Computers will handle the repair. We stock spare parts for CAV Program models, and offer loaner computers if extensive repairs are required.

The CAV Program provides UVA students a variety of products and services not available elsewhere, along with the convenience of on-Grounds service. In addition, Cavalier Computers and the University Bookstores provide annual financial support to the University in the form of scholarships and initiatives.

Please visit www.cavprogram.com to view the Class of 2025 CAV Program offerings and to sign up to attend one of the Cavalier Computers virtual information sessions on May 18, 21 or June 2. If you have any questions about the CAV Program or about our products or services, please do not hesitate to contact Cavalier Computers via e-mail at [email protected].

We look forward to having you with us on Grounds this fall!

Sincerely,

Colette Sheehy
