Election Day Information

November 7, 2016
All University Students

Fellow students,

Election Day is tomorrow and, for many of us, this is the first time we will be voting in a presidential or general election. The checklist of questions included below should help you finalize your voting plan, including transportation options that are available (see below). Make a plan and stick to it. Your vote matters.

I would like to reiterate what President Sullivan said in her email last week. After the results of the election have been announced, we must come together as a community and move forward. We all may not always agree, but we must always treat each other with respect. Our community is filled with a spectrum of perspectives, but we are united in our humanity. Making members of our community feel unwelcome or threatened because of their views will not be tolerated. If you see something that violates our values of tolerance and inclusion, speak up and report it.

If you are concerned for your own well-being or safety on Election Night, please do not hesitate to call University Police at 911.

Go vote and shape the future of our country. Every vote counts.

Student Council President

Polling Locations

  • What type of ID will you bring?
You can use your UVA Student ID to vote!
Other acceptable forms of ID include Virginia DMV-issued photo IDs and driver's licenses; U.S. passports; employer-issued photo IDs; student photo IDs from a Virginia college or university; photo ID cards issued by the U.S., Commonwealth of Virginia, or local Virginia government; and Virginia Voter ID Cards.

  • How will you get there?
UVA students have many options for transportation to the polls thanks to the hard work of the UVA and Charlottesville communities. Details can be found on the Parking & Transportation website. General transportation options include:

    • Van Shuttle to U-Hall: Tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Safe Ride vans will provide a continuous shuttle between the First-Year housing area and University Hall (U-Hall). Vans will pick up riders on Leake Drive, one block north of the O-Hill Dining Hall. Please note that you may not request Safe Ride vans by phone or the mobile app. Vans will only pick up on Leake Drive and then outside of U-Hall.
    • CAR2Vote: CAR2Vote is an independent, nonpartisan service providing free rides to the polls for voters in Central Virginia. The drivers provide rides to anyone who requests one, and they don't ask for whom the rider is voting. A CAR2Vote vehicle will be available on Ruppell Drive (the cul de sac near the Commerce School) tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
    • Transit: The University Transit Service (UTS) and Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) provide service to polling locations near Grounds.
    • Yellow Cab: Yellow Cab is offering a $5 off special on Election Day for people riding to their polling places. Participants must give their polling place location to the dispatcher in order to receive the discount.
    • Carpooling, Share Your Ride: UVA offers a free, secure, and instant online ride-matching system: Zimride. Students may post available seats in their car to share the ride to the polls.
