To the University Community:

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the death of incoming first-year student Joshua Richardson, who passed away while enrolled at the University in Summer Session III. Josh was a new member of the University’s varsity swimming and diving team.

Josh was one of 11 children in his Mishawaka, Indiana, family, graduating from Marian High School last spring. Prior to coming to the University, Josh was a highly competitive diver with the Double Dragon Diving club. A gymnast who later took up diving, Josh qualified for multiple USA Diving National Championships. UVA Head Diving Coach Jason Glorius noted that Josh “could do some crazy stuff on a trampoline and diving board. He was poised to really contribute to our program.”

Josh is described by those who knew him as a laid back yet outgoing young man who quickly made many friends in his short time at the University. He and some of his new friends at UVA had already created a summer tradition of morning bagel trips. Josh was excited to receive an offer to attend UVA as a student-athlete and considered it a great honor. He was also a wonderful mentor to children, coaching gymnastics in his hometown and interacting warmly with the children of his coach.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Josh’s parents, Mark and Linda Richardson; his siblings; other family members; and his new friends and classmates at UVA. Funeral services have not yet been scheduled, but that information may be obtained from the Office of the Dean of Students in the near future.

The loss of a classmate and fellow member of our community is painful and unsettling, all the more so when our community has scattered for summer break. If you need support during this time, you may call Counseling and Psychological Services at 434-243-5150 during the regular summer hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Monday through Friday). After hours, the number to call is 434-972-7004. Information about CAPS is available on the Student Health website.

Faculty and staff can find a similar resource through the Faculty and Employee Assistance Program by calling 434-243-2643 or by emailing the office via the website.

Please take care of yourselves while most of you are away from the Grounds, and keep Josh’s family in your thoughts. I wish you the very best as you prepare to return to Grounds in a few short weeks.
