It was nearly a year ago that the UVA community, both near and far, mourned the tragic deaths of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry, as well as the injuries to two other students, Mike Hollins and Marlee Morgan. Many on our Grounds were deeply affected by the events of November 13, 2022.
As the home football season begins, we will come together in honoring these talented, much loved young men. They left their marks in countless ways. They were hardly one-dimensional individuals, but football united them. This weekend, when the first home football game since November 12, 2022, will be played, the University will hold a community-wide remembrance celebrating their lives and honoring their legacies.
Events will begin on Friday with a Memorial Tree Planting and Plaque Dedication Ceremony, and will continue with more tributes prior to Saturday’s game in Scott Stadium. To learn more about the Wahoo Walk, student tailgate, free UVA Strong T-shirts, and other highlights, see the Athletics website. All fans are encouraged to wear orange to the game.
Friday’s ceremony will be an important opportunity to remember those affected by last year’s tragic events while joined together as a University community. This coming November 13 will also be a time of University-wide remembrance, including a solemn tolling of the chapel bells and a moment of silence.
Friday’s tree planting and plaque dedication follows a longstanding UVA tradition of planting trees to honor members of our community. An Overcup Oak has been selected for the memorial. A native species, this tree can reach 60 feet in height and live for hundreds of years. Also following tradition, those who attend the ceremony will be invited to sprinkle a spade of dirt around the base of the tree.
It’s important to acknowledge that not everyone will want to attend the ceremony, based on their phase of recovery. Any students who need assistance are encouraged to reach out to Counseling and Psychological Services.
In the event of severe weather, the ceremony will be moved to Culbreth Theatre.
If you plan to attend on Friday, you are asked to register in advance. Due to the expectation of large attendance, overflow seating and remote viewing locations are available in the Drama Building (Culbreth Theatre) and in Campbell Hall (Rooms 158 and 160). You may also watch the livestream from any location.
