Current Issues in Student Life and Available Resources

November 12, 2016

Dear Parents:

We have arrived at the end of a tumultuous week for our country. The tensions witnessed nationally also are in evidence here at the University. Students are experiencing a range of emotions, with shock, anger, sadness, and uncertainty seeming to predominate. Whether supporting the winning side or the losing side, many students are navigating an intense environment right now. We acknowledge this current environment and ensure you that we are here to support all of our students.

Statement from the University Police Department

November 10, 2016

Dear Students:

The University of Virginia Police Department takes seriously its mission to serve and protect the UVA community. Our officers consider it an honor to work for a University that prides itself on the virtues of honor, trust and integrity.

I was disappointed to learn of reports that UPD personnel allegedly used the public address system in their vehicle inappropriately following the results of the election in the early morning hours on Wednesday. UPD is investigating this incident and takes this matter seriously.

Election Day Information

November 7, 2016

Fellow students,

Election Day is tomorrow and, for many of us, this is the first time we will be voting in a presidential or general election. The checklist of questions included below should help you finalize your voting plan, including transportation options that are available (see below). Make a plan and stick to it. Your vote matters.

Important Update on Bias-Motivated Incidents

November 2, 2016

Dear Students:

As you are aware from prior emails from University leaders and coverage in the local media, bias-motivated incidents at the University have increased this fall. There are several theories for why this may be occurring, including the tone and tenor of the ongoing national election. In the past day, we have seen additional incidents of hateful acts, including a racial slur used against African-American students and a homophobic slur placed on another student's door, both occurring in on-Grounds residential communities.

Important Message from Dean of Students Allen Groves

October 31, 2016

Dear Students:

Sometime yesterday afternoon or evening, an unknown individual or individuals wrote a message on the wall next to the door of two Muslim students living in Brown Residential College. The message consisted of the word “terrorist” with an arrow pointing to the students' door, written in lead pencil. It is our belief this graffiti was placed at this specific location to target and intimidate the residents who live in this room. As a community, we categorically reject and condemn this type of hateful message.

Code Enforcement for Mopeds and Scooters

October 27, 2016

Dear Students:

As part of the University's efforts to create a safe community, we are providing the following information about the use of mopeds and scooters on University property and related code enforcement.

Mopeds and scooters are considered motor vehicles, just like cars, and must follow the same Commonwealth of Virginia codes. Like cars or trucks, the following laws apply:

Important Message from Dean of Students Allen Groves

October 23, 2016

Dear Students:

Late last night or early this morning, an unknown individual or individuals painted anti-Semitic graffiti on a wall of the GrandMarc apartment complex. A photograph of the offensive graffiti appears below. The graffiti references language used in the Holocaust and is designed to target and intimidate individuals of the Jewish faith. Although the GrandMarc is private property, it also represents the home of a great many students. As a community, we categorically reject this type of hateful message, which is anathema to our shared values of inclusiveness and trust.

A Message for Students

October 13, 2016

Dear Students:

Over the years I have encouraged UVA students to be active bystanders and to offer assistance if you witness sexual violence or other unsafe situations on our Grounds. You have provided strong leadership in this area through your #HoosGotYourBack awareness campaign.
