Concert Update and Welcome Week 2017

August 18, 2017

To the University Community:

As chair of the University Programs Council, an organization on Grounds founded to provide welcoming and inclusive events and spaces for students, I and the rest of our Council are grateful for the opportunity to welcome students to Grounds this upcoming week. However, I feel we would not be following through on this promise of inclusion if we did not speak out against the hatred and violence our community has recently experienced.

Starting the New Year

August 16, 2017

Dear Students:

I begin this message with a warm welcome to our new students. We look forward to introducing you to the UVA family and all the opportunities that await you as a member of this community. I've enjoyed meeting you and your parents over the summer, and I am anticipating the many ways in which you will be contributing to this special place.

An Update From President Sullivan

August 15, 2017

Dear Members of the University Community:

Last Friday torch-bearing protestors marched on our Grounds prior to Saturday’s rally and protests in downtown Charlottesville. Emotions remain raw in our community. We all mourn the loss of life on Saturday, the injuries, and the resulting distress. And we feel anger and frustration at the hateful messages that were directed to valued members of our community. Beginning to heal as a community from this trauma takes time and energy. And we must do so together.

An Update for UVA Parents

August 15, 2017

Dear Parents:

We remain as enthusiastic as ever about the arrival this week of our new and returning students. It will be our privilege to serve as a continuing resource for them and to provide a safe, welcoming, and richly diverse environment for them to pursue their interests and aspirations. At the same time, the emotions of this past weekend remain very raw. Anger, fear, sadness, and disbelief have been left behind in the wake of the violence and hate brought here, largely by outsiders representing the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, and other white supremacist groups.
